Royal Cotillion; Invitation to the dance

Royal Cotillion Solitaire

Royal Cotillion solitaire is one of those games that takes a minute to learn and a lifetime to master, but here is some Royal Cotillion strategy to help you on your way!

This is a double-deck solitaire game.  The Foundations are in the center and build in twos in suit, so the piles shown with an A build:

A 3 5 7 9 J K 2 4 6 8 10 Q

And the piles with the 2 build:

2 4 6 8 10 Q A 3 5 7 9 J K

On the left, there are 4 Reserve stacks of 3 cards each.  These can only play to the foundations.

On the right, 16 Tableau stacks with 1 card each, which also only play to the foundations.  When you play one of these cards, it is replaced with the upcard from the deck (top left).

Because none of the stacks allow building, you might think of this as a mindless game. However, the game is often won or lost with basic solitaire strategies, and I am here to show you how.

♦ ♣ ♥ ♠

You MUST use the highlighted J♠ from the reserve on the first available foundation.

Why?

The J♠ is on top of the other 9♠, so if you don’t use it on the first foundation, you’ll be blocked from using it on the other foundation.  The same is true for the 8♦, as you can see it is blocking a 4♦.  Watch out for these potential blockages in the reserve.

♦ ♣ ♥ ♠

The main difference between Royal Cotillion and other auto-fill games is the reserve. How do you know when to play the 3♥ from the tableau and when to play the 3♥ from the reserve?

Well in this case, using the 3♥ from the reserve will allow you to access an A♦ for the foundation. When you can unlock a reserve card you really need, absolutely you should use the reserve first.

♦ ♣ ♥ ♠

If you are down to the LAST card in a reserve pile, use an alternate in the tableau or a card turned up from the deck if available.

That reserve card will be available, at your convenience, without blocking any other cards or spaces, for as long as you need it. Alternately, once you empty a reserve space, it can never be refilled.  Ergo, there is no hurry to empty a reserve.

Really, the goal is to move cards from the deck to the foundations.  The tableau and the reserve are just tools to help you on your quest.
